In 1812 the first school was built. The three story log building was erected on the corner of what is now known as Broad Boulevard and Front Street. The second floor was used as one large classroom, filled with rows of benches made of halved logs. The other two floors were used for other purposes. The school taught reading, writing and arithmetic.

Other one room schools built were Stow Township School on East Portage Trail at Newberry Street, Tallmadge Township School at Williams Street and Newberry Street, Portage Township School at Second Street and Sackett Street and the Northampton School at Wadsworth Street and Front Street.

The site of one of these can still be located behind St. John's Church, a few yards up Second Street north of Portage Trail, where a worn stone walk leads from the city street to three stone steps now almost hidden by bushes. It was over this walk and up these steps into the one-room school that many of the early settlers of Cuyahoga Falls went daily to learn their "3 R's". After the building was no longer used as a school it remained some time as a public assembly hall with a stage and scenery for the production of plays. Eventually it was condemned and dismantled, but the walk still remains to mark this historic spot.

Actual Rules for Teachers (circa 1915)

1. You will not marry during the term of your contract.
2. You are not to keep company with men.
3. You must be home between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless attending a school function.
4. Your dresses must be not be any shorter than two inches above the ankle.
5. You may not travel beyond the city limits unless you have the permission of the chairman of the (school) board.
6. You may not ride in a carriage or automobile with any man unless he is your father or brother.
7. You may not dress in bright colors.
8. You may under no circumstances dye your hair.
9. You must wear at least two petticoats.
10. You may not loiter downtown in ice cream stores.
