St.
John's Episcopal Church
The Episcopal Church and
society were organized in 1830
by William Wetmore. The church
edifice on the southeast
corner of the public square,
facing Second street, was
erected in 1835. Prior to that
they met in a schoolhouse at
Front and Wadsworth Streets.
Shortly thereafter,
construction was started at
its present site on Portage
Trail and Second Street. It
was made a house of worship by
Bishop McIlvaine on July 16,
1836.
 The
first rector of the society
was Rev. William H. Newman of
Bristol, RI, from November 10,
1835 to January 18, 1837. Rev.
Newman was succeeded by Rev. Zechariah
Mead, of Virginia but
relinquished his duties after
about one month and returned
to Virginia. Next came Rev.
Mr. Cushman, who also served a
very brief time. Rev. Albert
T. Bledsoe managed to stay
about four months and then
resigned in order to accept a position
as a professor at the
University of Virginia. Other
rectors have been: Thomas B.
Fairchild 1840-1844, Alvah
Guion for about one year,
David Burger died suddenly
after only a few months
service, Levi L. Holden from
1847 to 1867, George Bosley
from 1867 to 1871, T. B.
