United Presbyterian Church

In 1914, the North End of Cuyahoga Falls was just starting to develop.  Two neighborhood housewives had a vision of a church in the North End.  They requested help from North Hill United Presbyterian and the Metz United Presbyterian Churches.

On August 2nd, 1914 the North End United Presbyterian Sabbath School met at 2:30 on a Sunday afternoon in Crawford School.

On September 10th, 1916, the first service was held in the basement of the new building.  On December 17th, 1916, the building was completed and the congregation was officially organized with 49 charter members.

We honor them for their perseverance, and for what they accomplished in just over two years.  We remember our roots as we still use the Metz churches’ Communion bread recipe for our traditional Communion service.

In the early years, we were a “neighborhood” church with most people walking.  When the expressway cut through our neighborhood, taking many homes of our members, we branched out.  We now have members from all over the Cuyahoga Falls area including Stow, Silver Lake, Munroe Falls, Tallmadge and Akron.

The first building was built on the corner of Payne Avenue (now Hudson Drive) and Ashland Avenue, which is now the lawn in front of our educational wing.  An educational building was erected in 1949 and our current sanctuary was built in 1958.  An elevator addition and kitchen remodel was completed in 1998.

Since it was organized, the United Presbyterian Church has had ten installed Senior Pastors.  Rev. Paul V. Stunkel served from 1985 to 1996. The interim period (1997 – 1999) was filled by Rev. Dan McKee. Recently the Reverends Laurel and Steve Brundage served as co-pastors from 1999 to 2002. Our present interim pastor is Dr. Richard Hasler.

Our congregation has been instrumental in the formation of four churches in the surrounding area.  These churches are Northminster Presbyterian (1953), Stow Presbyterian (1960) Kent Presbyterian (1960) and Hudson Presbyterian (1982).

As of December 31, 2002 our active church membership is 409 and our church school enrollment is approximately 302, which includes nine adult Sunday school classes.
