Churches
The early pioneers that traveled
west in search of new lands
brought not only brought
families and possessions but
also knowledge and faith in
God.
The first
religious meeting was held in
the home of William Wetmore in
the year 1818. Friends and
neighbors gathered together
regularly to sing hymns and
read the Bible. When a
minister, preacher, or circuit
rider was available in the
community, regular services
would be held and the rites of
baptism and communion would be
celebrated.
In the year
1830 this same group organized
St. John's Episcopal Church
but still continued to meet at
the homes of members.
Shortly
afterward, around 1835, a
block of land lying between
Portage Trail and Stow Street
and between Second and Third Streets
were dedicated as a church
park. St. Johns was the first
to erect a structure on this
plot. Other congregations were
not far behind.
